What are some of the macro trends you see you your industry that affect how research should be done? For example, if an industry is on the verge of being displaced by a new technology, that can completely change our approach to World Class R&D for the current technology. If we seen convergence or consolidation in the industry, that may mean yet another approach.

What are the traits of a good R&D leader? In the pharmaceutical industry one respected author feels that these individuals only come along every once in a while and it's corporate management's primary job to keep a look for them. Is it right for this website to not include leadership as an Areas of Focus?
folder
Great R&D leaders come along only once in a while. Corporate management should focus exclusively on identifying and hiring those individuals - Walter Sneader, author History of Drug Discovery, personal communication. The World Class R&D approach is to set up the R&D environment so that merely good leaders can become great leaders. The way we structure the work, the governance structure and decision-making support allows managers to spend more time focused on what really matters: the motivations and passions of individual researchers. What's your opinion on this question?

Setting up an environment that encourages effective R&D behaviors and vice versa is core to all of World Class R&D. It is the topic of the Key Area of Focus: Organizational Behaviors. This forum is to identify and discuss which behaviors are effective in which circumstances. How do we know if a behavior is effective or not over the long run?
folder
A key argument of World Class R&D is that the work should be structured in a way that takes into account behavior fundamentals. For example, you can often predict how individuals will behave under a competitive environment, so we pay attention to the amount of competition we build into our industrial model. This is the section to discuss behavior fundamentals and their applicability to World Class R&D.

Behaviors are ugly. What you interpret in my behavior as 'Knowledge Is Power' is merely my attempt to not waste your time with my tentative conclusions. Or is it? That behavior you interpret as harmful when all is going well may be just what you need when we're in crisis mode. This is the place to discuss detailed behaviors in all their glory.
