World Class R&D means World Class revenues. R&D organizations aiming lower can still benefit from the recommendations in this community, but it’s the passion, excitement and glory of the hunt for whales that drives much of the discussion.

World Class R&D is more oriented towards firms exploiting science at the boundaries
Although R&D organizations can achieve blockbuster+ revenues by more cleverly exploiting existing, proven science and technologies (and this skill is also important for a World Class R&D organization) it is only by going beyond the proven science that a company can maintain its long term product superiority.
Scale has nothing to do with the designation World Class
You can be a small biotech or any small firm that has a desire for blockbuster potential, and this website can be useful for your pursuit (e.g., doing Alternate Competing Hypotheses+ - lite). However, smaller firms are disadvantaged in that they typically have limited funds and cannot place many investment bets – and therefore are often held hostage+ to the work in process. It’s much harder to change directions, and it’s much harder to get an unbiased assessment whether or not the current direction is correct. However, there are clever techniques for overcoming some of these disadvantages.
There is a bias in the opening arguments that favors revenues derived from consumers
It's not that the recommendations in this website will not apply to companies engaged in R&D to find products sold to other companies. It's just that the bias exists (at least at this point in the life of the community) due to the background of the editor. This is relevant for individuals working in small biotechs or other small technology firms who look to build a convincing narrative about their patented technology in order to get acquired or bought-out. It can be argued these entities have sold their ‘product’ at blockbuster levels, but the core arguments on this website (especially those relating to Evidence Gathering) may not be as helpful in these companies.
